Want to Make Sure Your Roofer Is Not Ripping You off for Materials?

Tips on How a Roofer Estimates Roofing Materials

If you are thinking of adding an extra layer to your existing roofing, you only have to worry about calculating how many shingles and nails you need. However, if you are replacing your old roofing, you need also to estimate the roofing materials too, like underlayment and the drip edges. To do this, you have to understand how to change measurements into shingles to get a more accurate estimate for the materials you will have to order.

Calculate the square footage of your roof.

Measure the width and length of your roof, multiply the length and width for each section, then add them altogether to get the square footage. Calculate the number of squares, then divide this by 100, in order to obtain the number of squares on your roof.

Calculate the bundles of shingles required for your roof.

Three bundles will cover one square if you are using 3 tab shingles, which is the standard kind. Don’t forget to take into account wastage. Add 10% to your shingle estimate, this will take into consideration any wastage. If your roof has hips and valleys, then make it 15%, because of wastage when cutting around valleys.

Estimating Felt Underlayment

Calculate the square footage of your roof.

Measure the width and length of your roof, multiply the length by the width for each section, and add them together. Identify the number of squares. A roofer will measure the surface in squares of 100 feet. Divide this by 100 in order to get the number of squares on your roof.

Calculate how many rolls of underlayment you will need.

The 15 type is the most used, and one roll of this will cover 4 squares. If you are using 15 underlayment and your roof pitch is more than 4:12, then use a layer. if the pitch is from 3:12 to 4:12, double this amount, and install 2 layers.
